4 Focuses For A Better You In The New Year

The blank canvas of a new year can be something that we look forward to because we get a fresh start to create another year of our lives. At the same time, last year brought us many opportunities to change whether we liked it or not. No matter where we ended last year, we have the chance to create the person we want to become this year. Here are four ways to take control of who you want to become this year.

Simplify – Often, we start to think about all the things we need to start doing or something we need to bring into our lives. What if this year we took the opposite approach? What are things we need to take out of our lives to give us more time to think. More time for peace. More time to focus on our strengths.

Live Today – Stress does not exist in the present. It is only in the past when we don’t give ourselves the gift of moving on. It can also be waiting for us in the future if we focus too much on what might be. When we live for today, and the moment we have now, life becomes a lot less stressful. We can’t change or control the past, so don’t let it be your anchor. The key to the future is the word “might”. What might happen. Most of the things we spend our time stressing about in the future will never happen. Live for today; control what you can control.

How Can You Serve Today? – What if this was the only question you asked yourself each day? How would your day and actions change? One of the best ways to find your strengths and grow yourself is to serve others. When we think outside of ourselves, we see growth, and we are naturally pointed to areas we can have an impact. People are waiting for you to forget yourself and serve.

Direction Is More Important Than Speed – Start this year with the intention of the person you want to become. Ground yourself in the values you hold important. Some days will be great where you can see yourself grow and perform, and some will be hard and slow. The important thing is that you are pointed in the right direction. When you focus on getting your direction right each day, you can remember that progress is indeed progress. No matter if it is a foot or a mile, it is still progress. When your direction is right, speed is not important.

No matter where you are in life, today is an opportunity. There may be many things that might be going against you but focus on the things you can control. This is where the power lies. Let this be the year that you paint your own picture on this fresh canvas of a new year.
