Leadership starts in the home

Don’t Save Your Wine

“Most humans are never fully present in the now because unconsciously, they believe that the next moment must be more important than this one. But then you miss your whole life, which is never not now.” – Eckhart Tolle

I heard a story one time about Jack Welch. Welch was a very successful COE at the General Electric company and widely regarded as one of the greatest leaders in corporate America. For years he led one of the most successful companies in the world.

The story goes that Welch had a heart attack. All the years of stress and long working hours caught up with him. As most of us would after a life-changing event like a near-death experience, it made Welch take account of his life. As he talked to one of his friends about what he took away from the experience, he told them with a laugh, “I am going to stop drinking the cheap wine.”

The cheap wine he would have on a daily basis. The expensive wine he was saving for those times in life that warranted something better than the cheap wine. Most of us have something we are saving for these special moments in life. It takes a life-threatening situation to understand what a gift life is.

What if every day was a special occasion? The fact that we are lucky enough to live and breathe today. The chance for us to take a step closer to who we were meant to be. We never know when our time will be called. As Welch pointed out, if we are always waiting for life to be special, we don’t realize that every moment we live has the chance to be one of great worth for us.

If we are always waiting for life to be better, we are never able to live in the moment. As Welch pointed out to his friend, if you are always waiting for something better, you will spend your life drinking only cheap wine. Even though you have a cellar full of the good stuff. Every day can be the good stuff if you are looking. Don’t waste your life in “cheap” moments simply because you are waiting for something special. Because when you start to live in the moment, you will realize how special each one can be.
