Leadership starts in the home

Open Mind Policy

People are very open-minded about new things – as long as they’re exactly like the old ones.  – Charles Kettering

Many times in the office setting, you will hear a manager say they have an open-door policy. This means you can come in at any time to talk or give ideas. If the manager truly believes in this open-door policy, they can build some great rapport as well as get some game-changing ideas from their people.

As a parent leader, you may not have a fancy office, but you can still implement this same policy. An open mind policy is more critical than how wide the crack in your door is. An open mind opens us up to opportunities to make our families even better. An open mind allows you to give up the good for the great.

Just because things are going well does not mean they can’t get better. We get stuck when we settle with the good. Be open to new ideas and seek them out. They might come from something you read or those in your family. Seek the counsel of your children on how the family can handle a situation. Don’t be afraid to try new things for yourself and your family.

A great leader listens to all suggestions and is not afraid to try new things. But just because you listen to all suggestions does not mean you have to implement them all. Your judgment will bring a balance of trying new things but staying strong in your values and what is working. As long as your intent is to progress your family toward your purpose, your open mind will lead you to where you want to be.
