Leadership starts in the home

Leadership Quotes for Parent Leaders

I love quotes and everything about them.  They can pick you up when you are feeling down, give you a different perspective on a topic, and the thing I love most about them is the little insight into the minds of amazing people.  There are many great business minds out there with years of experience working with people and organizations.  Here are a couple of quotes from great business leaders that we can apply to our families to help us find success.
The key to successful leadership is influence, not authority. – Ken Blanchard
One of the reasons I first started this blog was through all my reading and study on leadership I found how interchangeable leader and parent are.  Read this quote again as we swap that one word.  The key to successful parenting is influence, not authority.
I know many times in my life with my children I focus more on authority and not influence.  When you have authority we do find ourselves with influence over those whom we have authority but there is a difference in the type of influence we can have.  I once heard the phrase an “influence for good” and I absolutely fell in love with that phrase.
We can have influence in many ways but just because we have influence does not mean that influence is having a positive impact.  Influence and leadership are all about the relationships we have with those in our authority.  If influence is all about relationships we need to take daily steps in our relationships with our family members each day.  Don’t focus so much on the authority we have as parent leaders but the influence we can have.  How did you use your influence today?
Before you are a leader success is all about growing yourself.  When you become a leader success is all about growing others. – Jack Welch
Great leaders make other leaders.  In order to be able to make other leaders we need to start with ourselves.  Leadership is not always about taking the reins and people following you.  We are all leaders of 1, and that 1 is ourselves.  As we start to work on ourselves and growing in who we are we are able to help others grow.
I feel that working on ourselves is a daily process just like bathing.  Do we have to do it….no, but if we don’t we start to stink.  Each day we need to be working on making ourselves better in some shape or form.  It may be physical, emotional, or how we deal with others but each day is the opportunity to be better than we were yesterday.
As we focus daily on ourselves we can then help others grow and there is no greater influence you can have for good than in the four walls of your own home.  As you work through your own goals you are better equipped to help others in your family set and achieve their goals.  Personal growth does not just happen we need to be intentional each day about our own and teaching others about the steps and habits that are needed to be a leader of 1.
